Established in December 1984, the Centro Speleologico Etneo (C.S.E.) was born "already adult", an exceptional event in a panorama of voluntary associations created by a small number of initial promoters and growing in course of their lives through new affiliations.
The center already started with numerous founding members, the first part of the Gruppo Grotte Catania (G.G.C.) within the Etna section of the CAl Italiano.
At the time of its establishment, therefore, it is possible to say that the Centre was in reality already established, with all the advantages that this entails from the point of view of the experience and cultural background of the group of members.
At the Etna Speleological Centre, the technical experience, especially from an exploratory point of view, is a differential character, as demonstrated by the extraordinary discovery of the Villasmundo cave, in seventies, which still holds the record for horizontal length among the Sicilian cavities, but the immense educational and scientific background also plays a fundamental role, with the many courses organized from its first training in the seventies up to the present day, for the first , and the commitment in the field of Vulcanospeleology, for the latter.
With this change of status in 1984, which led to the new name of the association, the group of speleologists of the provincial capital grouped together under the new name of Centro Speleologico Etneo , carrying on the tradition with the energy of a new association.
Generations of speleologists therefore join together within the centre, making the organization a living organism, with vital roots in the tradition of Italian speleo.
