Gruppo Speleologico CAI Perugia

Speleology is an activity historically practiced in the Perugia area since the beginning of the twentieth century with the commitment that the geology departments of the university and the various associations that have operated in this type of research have always placed in this type of research. sector, such as the CAI, the CTG and the ASCI. Precisely from the union of these last three, back in 1953, the CAI Perugia Speleological Group was born.

The history of the explorations and research carried out by the group has seen a progressive extension of the field of action, from the concentration on the limestone cavities found in the Umbria-Marche Apennines, which characterized the first years of exploration, up to to exploratory expeditions in other nations and continents: Spain, France and Greece in Europe, but also projects in Russia and Brazil.

One of the fundamental commitments of the Speleological Group is aimed at bringing an ever-increasing number of enthusiasts closer to the practice of speleology, concretely through the organization and proposal of guided excursions to discover environments hypogea and then training courses, from introduction to speleology to technical advancement courses for more prepared speleologists.

The CAI Perugia Speleological Group has also always been committed to the preservation of karst and non-karst environments, and to the consequent work of raising public awareness in relation to issues relating to environmental and speleological protection, taking informative and educational lessons for schools and organizing special events such as themed photographic exhibitions and meeting opportunities for speleologists from all over Europe.

Alongside speleological research in natural settings, there is another object of interest for the group, that of urban speleology, which has led to the exploration of extraordinary historical routes such as different tunnels of Etruscan origin or cisterns of medieval construction.
