The birth of a speleological group in Val Tanaro is justified by the great importance of the karst phenomena in this area which presents a large occurrence of limestone residues, a factor that unites it with the Trieste Karst and the Alps Apuane.
Over six hundred natural cavities are found enclosed between the various reliefs found in the area: the caves are made up of deep vertical abysses in the Val d'Inferno, on Monte Armetta and on Bric Conoia, in particular.
The Marguareis-Mongioie relief is the one that more than any other proves to be rich in underground systems including the Piaggia Bella complex, one of the most interesting objects of study, with 14 entrances for an internal development of approximately 39 kilometers and 950 meters deep.
The Speleo Club Tanaro has a long history behind it of successes, explorations and important collaborations with speleological groups from neighboring regions.
