Description of Guided tour of Otranto, the easternmost city
In the company of the guide we will have fun exploring one of the most artistically important cities in the region: the beautiful Otranto, pearl of the Salento territory with its historic center of Norman origin .
Our guide will escort you on this very pleasant and peaceful walk through its streets dotted with small shops dedicated to local crafts.
The key points of our excursion will be different: we will start with the Cathedral, built during the Norman domination at the behest of Roger I and consecrated in the year 1088.
The cathedral preserves inside the splendid floor mosaic dated 1166, which illustrates the annual division into monthly payments and subjects belonging to the pages of the Old Testament.
It will then be the turn of the Church of San Pietro and, finally, the Medieval Castle.
The guide will illustrate the interventions implemented on the latter over the years, such as the reinforcement work by Emperor Frederick II Hohentsaufen of Swabia or the reconstructive one ordered by Alfonso II of Naples between the years 1485 and 1498.
The castle is particularly interesting from an architectural point of view due to its irregular plan on five sides and the ancient moat surrounding the entire perimeter wall, which can be overcome thanks to the active drawbridge on the only access road to the structure.
The entrance still stands today as the lemma of the Spanish emperor Charles V.
