Description of Two-hour guided tour of the Herculaneum excavations
Get ready to travel back two thousand years and discover the ancient ruins of Herculaneum, spared from the devastating Vesuvian eruption of 79 AD.
Today, the city sits about 75 feet underground and by visiting, you can see the marina area where 300 human skeletons were found.
During the visit we will admire some of the villas of the richest citizens of Herculaneum and other places, such as the garden of the "Hotel House", where the quince trees they were replanted on the charred roots of ancient fruit trees.
The next stop will be the hall of the Council of the Augustals, decorated with splendid frescoes depicting Hercules.
Afterwards, you will admire the mosaics of the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the nearby shop, where the containers of food and wine charred by the eruption are kept, still hanging on the walls. Visit the ancient spas still covered by Roman mosaics in the sauna rooms, gyms, frigidarium and calidarium.
The last stop will be the most spectacular villa in the city of Herculaneum, the Villa dei Cervi, with its lush mosaics, frescoes and statues.
