The Basilica of San Marco is the main cathedral of Venice and one of the main places of Christianity in the world.
Characterized by a Byzantine style, the basilica is famous for its mosaics which cover 8000 square meters of the walls. The golden background mosaics are envied all over the world. The mosaics not only tell salient parts of the Bible, but above all they are important testimonies of the history of Venice, through which we can discover the evolution that the city has had over the years.
Sculpture is a fundamental part of the church, with the particularity of being a harmonious union of elements coming from different places. The works present here were not designed with the basilica as their final destination, but arrived in this place after being collected from other places. The final result is a heterogeneous yet harmonious scenario.
Another fundamental part of the basilica is the bell tower of the church, 99 meters high and from which you can enjoy a unique view of the city. Dating back to the 12th century, it is surmounted by a statue of the Archangel Gabriel. You can climb to the top of this bell tower and enjoy one of the best views of the city over the entire lagoon.
Another unmissable part of the Basilica of San Marco is certainly its treasure, made up of precious jewels, among which the most important is undoubtedly the Pala d'Oro, an altarpiece completely covered in 'gold. Finally you can also visit the Museum of San Marco, containing objects belonging to the basilica including the Marc quadriga or the ferial altarpiece by Paolo Veneziano.
