The Palace owes its name to its first owner, the Florentine banker Luca Pitti, who in the fifteenth century had it built at the foot of the Boboli hill, on the other side of the Boboli hill. strong>Arno.
Known for having been the symbol of the consolidated power of the Medici family in Tuscany, the Palace became the property ofCosimo I de'Medici and his wife Eleonora di Toledo, when they bought it in 1550.
After the purchase, the structure was converted into the new grand ducal residence.
In reality, however, it was also the residence of two other dynasties: the Habsburg-Lorraines (successors of the Medici from 1737) and the Savoys: the latter lived in the palace from 1865 , as royals of Italy.
Currently the Palace is home to several museums, five to be exact: the Museum of Russian Icons, the Palatine Gallery, the Royal and Imperial Apartments strong>, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Fashion and Costume.
