Description of Guided tour of the Sassi of Matera

If you want to discover the Sassi di Matera, with us you can book your guided tour in the company of a qualified tourist guide.

The extraordinary town of Matera is considered one of the oldest human settlements in the world and, thanks to our guides, you will be able to discover its extraordinary and peculiar architectural structure which earned it its inclusion by UNESCO in the world heritage of humanity.

We will retrace the evocative streets that fascinated Mel Gibson and convinced him to make Matera the set of his "The Passion".

The tour will begin with the meeting in Piazza Pascoli which will give us a wonderful view of the Sasso Caveoso and the Collina Murgia.

We will move to the Palazzo Lanfranchi, which today houses the local museum dedicated to the collection of regional Medieval and Modern Art and the Church of Carmine.

We will walk through the streets of the historic center to reach the Church dedicated to San Pietro Caveoso.

Our itinerary also includes a stop at one of the characteristic "Cave-Houses" dug into the rock and which constituted the most common local architectural form at the beginning of the last century.

Along the way we will also visit an ancient rock cave in the Sassi and we will move to Sasso Caveoso for a wonderful walk and enjoy the beautiful view.

The tour will at this point include a visit to the Sasso Barisano, walking along the ancient gravina road.

Upon returning to the historic center, some surprises await us in the baroque area with a visit to the two fundamental places of worship of this period: the church of Santa Chiara and that of San Francesco di Assisi.

We will conclude, before saying goodbye, with the Romanesque cathedral.
