Tips if you are going to do Diving in Sicily

You must attempt a diving tour in Sicily if you are on vacation in the South or live there and want to immerse yourself in the crystal clear waters of its seas. Sicily has the most marine protected areas of any Italian region, why not visit them with a professional diving guide from one of the many Sicilian diving centres?

Sicily has a wide range of diving opportunities, so you're likely to discover one that suits you.

What types of diving activities can you participate in?


• For the less experienced we recommend a snorkelling tour: Snorkelling activities include a mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit, as well as trained operators who will take you through the gorgeous Sicilian seas. The most popular areas for this activity are Favignana and the Zingaro Nature Reserve, Ustica Island, Plemmirio, and the Aeolian Islands.

• If you want to give real scuba diving a shot but are still apprehensive or have not mastered it yet, we recommend the Baptism of the Sea. After a briefing in which the essential training is provided, a boat journey will transport you to the planned dive site. This form of diving never goes beyond a depth of 8 meters. It takes place in Lampedusa, Pozzallo (Ragusa) and Castellammare del Golfo.

• Alternatively, PADI Discover Scuba Diving is for anyone over the age of 10 who has never dived before. These brief and practical introduction scuba diving courses provide a schedule of scuba diving from a beach or boat, at shallow depths, for a short period. You can try this trip on the Isola delle Femmine, in Taormina, Erice, or Catania.

• If you want to do a PADI Open Water Diver course (the first level of diving certification), you can do so in a 4-5 day course, complete with scuba equipment, and dive on your own, wherever you are. This is available in diving centres in Catania, Taormina, Porto Empedocle, and Palermo.

• The Advanced Open Water Diver course is for experienced divers who wish to develop their diving abilities, dive to great depths, and challenge themselves. You will receive your Open Water Diver certification at the end of the course and will be able to learn how to dive at night. The greatest deals in Sicily may be found in San Vito Lo Capo, Castellamare del Golfo, Palermo, Mazzara del Vallo, Catania, Giardini Naxos, Messina, Milazzo, and Siracusa.

• If you are more interested in learning how to recognize and manage difficulties while diving, the Messina area offers Rescue Diver training, as well as the PADI Divemaster course. This course teaches you to become a leader and take responsibility during diving expeditions.

• We recommend the islands of Ustica, Lampedusa, the Aeolian and Lipari Islands, Stromboli, Pantelleria, Favignana, and the Egadi Islands to those who already have a license, and want to explore the island on their own or with experienced friends.

What sights can you observe at each location?


• On the island of Ustica, the Grotta dei Gamberi (Shrimp Cave), so named because of the small shrimps known as 'Parapandalus narval'. Here, you can travel down to a depth of 40 meters and witness cuttlefish, octopus, moraines, as well as a significant number of red shrimps and scorpionfish.

• Brown and golden groupers, snappers, lobsters, and moray eels, among other marine species, can be found in the southern half of the island of Lampedusa, Capo Grecale.

• The best scuba diving in the Aeolian and Lipari Islands is found in Filicudi! On the island of Filicudi, the Secca di Capo Graziano is famous, where you can dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters and see a wonderful underwater archaeological tour with artefacts dating back to the 2nd century BC.

• The best diving experience on Pantelleria Island is certainly Cala Gadir, which has unique archaeological importance due to the presence of amphorae and anchors on the seabed, as well as wrecks going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC.

• If you want to go diving in western Sicily, the best place to go is Favignana, which is located in the seas of the Egadi Islands. On Isola Galeotta, you'll find shoals of bream, salps, octopus, and moray eels. Cala Rotonda is the place to go if you want to dive into an underwater cave rich in crabs, Umbria fish, and moraines!

The diving expeditions in Sicily are endles! We can't forget Giardini Naxos near Taormina, for its underwater walls and caves, the area of Santa Maria La Scala (near Catania) for its marine canyon and the Gulf of Tonnara in San Vito lo Capo (Palermo).

When can I go scuba diving in Sicily?


Sicily has a Mediterranean climate, with hot and extended summers, warm and rainy winters, and varied weather throughout the year. With an annual temperature of 18 degrees, diving is possible all year long! However, for those who are sensitive to the cold, we recommend avoiding winter because the water temperature can drop to 15 degrees. Instead, wait until summer when the water temperature varies between 25 and 29 degrees. The best time to scuba dive in beautiful Sicily is from April/May to October/November.
