Come and discover the wonderful Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze!
The Gallery saw the light when the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo organized the Academy of Drawing Arts in 1784, which Cosimo I de Medici had founded in the second half of the sixteenth century.
The rooms of the San Matteo Hospital, dating back to the fourteenth century, and of the convent of San Nicolò Cafaggio are thus occupied: the museum thus comes to life, day after day, it enriched itself thanks to the suppression of the churches ordered first by Peter Leopold and then by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Certainly, the decisive event, which determined the immeasurable prestige of the museum, was the transfer of the majestic Michelangelo's David, directly from Piazza della Signoria, in the second half of Eighteenth century.
This sculpture, one of the most famous in the world, took nine years for the architect Emilio De Fabris to finish the construction of the Tribune, on which today the David stands in its entirety its splendor.
