Along the Tiber river, a few steps from the Basilica of San Petro in the Vatican, stands the Mausoleum of Hadrian, better known as Castel Sant'Angelo.
At the end of the bridge of the same name, this structure is one of a kind, managing to be a monument, archaeological area and museum at the same time.
History meant that the castle became a "museum of itself" and saw it go from Mausoleum to National Museum in 1925. Three main areas of interest: the Roman remains of the imperial mausoleum , the fortified castle and the papal apartments.
To date, the rooms host numerous works of art, from sculptures to paintings, from marble finds to furniture and antique objects. Of particular interest is the collection which presents memorabilia from the Italian Army.
Furthermore, in some seasons of the year, it is possible to walk along the famous "Passetto", an elevated passage that connects Castel Sant'Angelo directly to the Vatican >and which, for many years, in the past was used by the Heads of the Church as a safe route in case of need, to escape or hide from possible dangers.
To date, the visits organized at the castle are unmissable: you will have the opportunity to access the different rooms and discover parts of the history and art of our country.
